Now that you're well versed on the best beaches of the region, how about a little hometown love? The beaches in Sault Ste. Marie were a major reason for me coming home. Nestled comfortably right at the meeting point of Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron, you're never more than 30 minutes away from the perfect sun + sand.
Harmony Beach: Located in Haviland Bay, Harmony Beach is a local favorite. Only a half-hour drive from Sault Ste. Marie, this public beach features 3.2 km of stunning sand and great swimming. Stop by Timberland General Store on your way out to stock up on some snacks, as well as check out their adorable gift shop and Goulais River souveneirs. Bonus: LCBO right next door so you can load up your cooler!
Batchawana Bay: About a 45-minute drive north of Sault Ste. Marie on Highway 17N, Batchawana Bay boasts a broad arc of sand and swaying beach grasses abutted by windswept pine. It's the perfect spot for a warm water beach experience. This is my personal favourite spot! Pro tip: the Provincial Park beach gets pretty crowded. Head another 10 minutes up the highway, park at The Voyageur, and walk across the highway to the shore. The Voyageur apple fritters are a must try!
Pancake Bay: North of Sault Ste. Marie, Pancake Bay is known for its more than 3 km of beautiful sand beach and crystal clear blue water. The panoramic view of Lake Superior from the Edmund Fitzgerald Lookout hiking trail has proved to be a highlight of visiting this area. This is a great spot to go surfing in the right conditions!
Whether you're a local or a visitor, these beaches are sure to provide a relaxing and enjoyable summer experience. So pack your sunscreen, grab your beach towel, and head to one of these beautiful spots for a day of fun in the sun!
